Shan Carter and Gabriel Dance create interactive graphics and multimedia for the New York Times. On this edition of Interviews with Innovators, host Jon Udell asks them to explain how some of their favorite projects were done, and discuss how these online tools enhance and contextualize the stories told by Times reporters.
Gabriel Dance is Senior Multimedia Producer for The New York Times, and spends his days thinking about and developing interactive projects across all newspaper desks and exploring all mediums. He has captured, edited and produced photographs, audio and video that has appeared on nytimes.com as well as developed and programmed several major projects including The Bracket Tournament (an interactive, database driven college basketball pick 'em tournament), Faces of the Dead (an interactive graphic displaying the photos of those who have died in Iraq), and The Metropolitan Museum's New Greek and Roman Galleries (2007 SNDies Gold Medal winner).
Before working for nytimes.com Dance received his Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Technical Journalism (double major) from Colorado State University and a Master's degree in Multimedia Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While at Carolina, Dance worked on several projects including Chasing Crusoe (2006 SNDies Gold Medal winner) and Atacama Stories (2007 SNDies Bronze Medal winner).
Shan Carter joined The New York Times in 2006 as an interactive graphics editor; he is responsible for producing graphics for both print and online editions. Previously, Shan worked as the Opinion design director of the San Jose Mercury News and as a graphic artist for the Oakland Tribune. He and his teams have received awards from SND, Malofiej and Adobe for both print and online work.
