Many of us are involved in philanthropy, but we don't really know if the organizations we support are performing well. In fact, most nonprofits themselves do not even know how they are doing. In this audio interview with host Sheela Sethuraman, Jeff Mason reveals that some poorly performing organizations actually get a larger share of donations and more accolades than those that are more worthy. Mason discusses how he and a group of organizational leaders and evaluators are collaborating to develop a benchmark for effectiveness not only to evaluate organizations, but to inspire others to emulate those that are successful.

Jeff Mason is vice president of Social Solutions, a software provider for nonprofits. In 2008, he developed and launched an industry leadership group, the Alliance for Effective Social Investing, featuring some of the most influential leaders spanning the nonprofit sector. Previously, Mason led marketing and product management at Artifact Software, a company he co-founded. Before that, he served as Sequoia Software's (NASDAQ: SQSW) vice president of marketing, playing an integral role in developing Sequoia into a market-leading, publicly traded organization. In addition to his nonprofit and technology industry experience, he also held several sales and marketing positions with Wyeth (NYSE: WYE) and IMED Corporation, marketing a variety of medical products to independent hospitals, HMOs, and national health care systems. Mason has a BS in marketing from the Pennsylvania State University and an MBA from Loyola College.
