Craig Mundie

Microsoft Chief Research and Strategy Officer

Craig Mundie

Join Craig Mundie, Chief Research and Strategy Officer for Microsoft, as he talks about the future of IT in government.

Major technological change is to be expected over the next five to ten years. With decreasing costs for even more powerful processors, the level of IT integration in people's daily life is increasing and now also extends to the developing world. From $100 dollar laptops to new forms of wi-max, consumer electronics have lowered the barrier of entry to providing novel networked solutions.

All the benefits gained from consumer electronics also provide new demand, and opportunities, for governments to adapt to this new digital world.  As governments become holders of greater amounts of public data, there are now calls to create applications that marry ease of use, with a capacity to empower individual action.  From energy conservation initiatives to expanding highspeed wireless in remote locations, Mundie continues on to discuss how governments address the twin problems of accountability and improved outcomes.

Craig Mundie is the Chief Research and Strategy Officer for Microsoft Corp. He is responsible for Microsoft's long-term technology strategy. For more than a decade, Mundie has also served as Microsoft's principal technology-policy liaison to the U.S. and foreign governments.

Mundie joined Microsoft in 1992 to create and run the Consumer Platforms Division, which developed non-PC platforms such as the Windows CE operating system; software for the Handheld PC, Pocket PC and Auto PC; and early console-gaming products. Mundie also started Microsoft's digital-TV efforts, acquiring and managing its WebTV Networks subsidiary.
