Quoting William Gibson with, "The future has already arrived. It’s just not evenly distributed yet," Tim O’Reilly focuses on the fundamental issues of information for the present and future. A large portion of data across the Internet is processed by the government and a handful of corporations who, in turn, can control access to information that is invaluable to society.

In this MySQL Conference presentation, O’Reilly also discusses the conflict of the possibility of those few companies owning the majority of information and Internet services, predicting that these groups will look towards their own profits and growth as opposed to customer satisfaction. He also discusses the benefits of a cloud infrastructure – a system in which databases and applications are shared between companies to prevent monopolies and to increase efficiency and data connections.

Noting the possibilities of open source data for health care, business, and day-to-day life, Tim O’Reilly frames the potential future with regards to business rules, ethics, and privacy.

Tim O'Reilly is the founder and CEO of O'Reilly Media, thought by many to be the best computer book publisher in the world. The company also publishes online through the O'Reilly Network and hosts conferences on technology topics. He is an activist of open source, open standards, and sensible intellectual property laws.

Since 1978, he has led the company's pursuit of its core goal: to be a catalyst for technology change by capturing and transmitting the knowledge of "alpha geeks" and other innovators. His active engagement with technology communities drives both the company's product development and its marketing. Tim has built a culture where advocacy, meme-making, and evangelism are key tenets of the business philosophy.
